Aaron Russell
Meet your instructor

Hi, I'm Aaron. I'll help you play Sunday with confidence.

I was raised in the Pentecostal church and I've spent my whole life on the keys. I learned by ear, picked up some formal training along the way, and I've been blessed to play and lead all kinds of church bands, from traditional and contemporary gospel to CCM. I love them all, and playing in that many rooms is where I really learned how the music works.

— Aaron Russell, founder of Holy Lessons

I started Holy Lessons because I kept noticing something. So many of the songs we all grew up on, the ones you're actually expected to play on a Sunday morning, nobody was teaching them. I wanted to change that. My heart is to teach you the songs and the skills that get you through a Sunday morning successfully, feeling ready instead of guessing.

Here's what makes our tutorials truly one of a kind. A lot of the lessons I came across online were taught by incredibly gifted, well-meaning musicians. No question about the talent. But they were hard to follow, because the music wasn't being taught in context. So we do it differently. About 99% of our song tutorials either play along to the actual master recording, or walk through nearly the full song before we ever start teaching it. That way you know exactly what you're working toward.

We call it the Play Along. You can come back to it any time to practice, or even pull out little gems we didn't have room to fully break down. There's always something in there.

I've been doing this since 2016, and along the way we've been joined by some incredible guest and recurring instructors. For many tutorials we also include click tracks, which are great for practice or for running with your band during a live service, plus MIDI files so you can study a song up close and learn it in keys besides the original.

And we're just getting started. The Holy Lessons mobile app is coming in late 2026 with some exciting new features for your whole music department, so stay on the lookout.

The thing that makes Aaron Russell unique is... you just sense an anointing on the song.
